On Computers and Software

Upgrades, changes, new software and hardware are exciting!

And - frustrating - and exciting - and frustrating - but usually quite intuitive and simple to do.

I have barely glanced at blogs or even comments I have received in recent weeks because I am doing too much of the above with all emotions present and accounted for as I upgrade, change, learn new software, and finally learned to use the network(s) to print.

Skype will only work on two out of three computers, that third one is plain stubborn - or broken? I couldn’t network a simple game either. And having trouble with some of my files going to the iDisk so… to sync Leon’s laptop to the iMac, Econ’s Chronosync! I downloaded it last night, but haven’t even read the instructions yet.

I still have to set up Time Capsule as our new router and as our backup using Time Machine on each computer.

Next, to figure out how to add Windows XP Professional to my Duo Core iMac - and - set up the VMware Fusion software to run it without having to power off to switch from OS X to Windows.

Last, the really fun part - not. Ridiculously expensive software to buy and learn for the business. So complicated to install most people have tech support walk them through it… fun!

That doesn’t count all the other software I have already begun learning… So, not necessarily hard, just too much and feeling too pressured to take my time, but then sometimes you have to wait until you earn the money to spend it - wise decision, but it sure does increase the need to do it now factor.

Now, back to reading instructions.

There have been more quick successes than setbacks though, I love learning this stuff!

Have a great day!

Why not do it right the first time?

How many times have we heard that question - or asked it of someone else? This time I’m asking myself. Rather than just go buy a firewire cable to transfer things to my new laptop, I tried doing it the hard way, the less efficient way, the way I didn’t understand — all of those — and a few easy ways, too. Of course, I did this over the course of days

I managed to get Leon’s 40 plus work photo files to his laptop quickly and easily using my .mac email! I used flash drives to transfer my documents and .mac sync to transfer mail folders, address book, etc. No brainers. But for our downloaded software and thousands of personal photos since I don’t have a flash drive big enough to handle them with ease, well, Leon is buying a new firewire cable, right now.

That didn’t work. Office Depot does not carry 6 pin to 6 pin. Guess we will have to find somewhere else to buy one. If only I had gotten one last weekend, imagine how much work otherwise I could have gotten done.

This would have been done last week had I just bought the cable. Lesson learned? Not necessarily, history likes to repeat itself, right?
