Aftermath of an Accident, fictional poem

Posted at 9:54 pm under Life Balance, Poetry or Short Fiction

Sometimes when my world feels so right, I find myself still feeling the hurts of others, empathy, I believe is the word. I have been writing poetry all day off and on, some happy, some sad, some, who knows. This just now, this very few moments, came out of nowhere as I was shutting down the computer for the night after a perfect weather day, a calm and peaceful day… probably in reaction to something I have read or heard, maybe because a friend is having a rough time, though her problems are not child related at all… guess it just brought out the mood. Written with the deepest respect for any who have lost a parent at any age, though this refers to a young child.

Note: This is a continuation of Poetry Tumble, usually presented on MeeAugraphie, where I make the last line of a poem the first line of the next poem, with no regard to the content of the previous poem. To read them all, so far, in order, click here. I was so involved in this one emotionally, that when I first clicked post, I had edited the first line a bit (”had left” to “gone” or whatever it was for those moments and “Mom” to “Mommy”) and totally forgotten it was part of Poetry Tumble. The first line now reflects the way I originally wrote it a few moments ago.

Aftermath of an Accident

They must have left with Mom,
his sisters, he meant,
though he really didn’t know
what a sister was
he only knew he would be
a big brother
and they would be
his little sisters
and look like
the baby next door
with wrinkled skin
(like his dog)
and teeny fists
and tinier toes,
but now their cribs
were gone,
and so was Mom
and so was her red car
and all these people
were patting his head,
his shoulder,
and now Daddy was hugging
him too hard
and he pulled away
and Daddy,
well, you know.

oh that was so hard to read! Good work.

Thank you, Damien, if it was hard to read, I did it right.
