Heads or Tails - 9-11

flip2.gif

She got us this week, through a tails on us, with good reason I think. Her subject to write about 9/11, where we were, how it affected us, etc.

When playing hooky became a stolen moment

Merely a common occurrence
in South Florida,
a quick trip to the dermatologist
to ward away

the evil effects

of the gorgeous sun.

2001, September 11,
I called it playing hooky back then,
my husband not at work,
but having an extra few hours with me
even if it was at a dreary office,
we had those few extra hours
together. Others would say I
was childlike in my inner delight

at such a little thing.

We sat in the lobby,
not like young lovers,
(we weren’t),
but like a couple

who had all the time in the world,

he did his thing, I did mine,
only the two of us knew

how connected we really were.

It was there we saw the planes hit,
all eyes glued to the TV,
those in the back rooms
oblivious to all we saw.

As we were called back
one by one
there was more than
doctor - patient talk going on,
each patient clamoring
to tell of what they
had just witnessed to
those who had not seen.
Our words did not convey,
not mine, not his,
not the other lady’s or man.

We lingered in the office
after our money had been
forked over to those behind
the safety of their desks,
(or so they thought that day)
our eyes glued to the TV
as more and yet more
horror unveiled itself.

I called it playing hooky then
I call it stolen moments now

it was not a conscious choice of words,
but in retrospect:

it was my subconscious stating a fact.

It was like that for all in our own little ways.. going about our days with no clue whatsoever about what was to happen.

Thank you for sharing your memories.

Skittles, I am so glad you started this meme, you give us a lot to think about whether we intend to or not, and an excuse to share those memories.

It was a different reaction for different people. Most were in shock and it had it’s affects on us all. Well put.

Mike, in shock is definitely one thing we were all in. It amazes me how resilient we are though….
