Knit Instructions for Six Inch Square — Share A Square
The Share A Square Project for Camp Sanguinity is progressing, but Shelly needs squares by many more people. A few squares, even just one square, from a multitude of people!
The crocheters have responded! Only a few knitters have responded! I am sure part of that reason is that it was originally presented as a crochet project, but knitters were welcomed! This pattern has no fancy stitches or wraparounds or standing on your head or knitting behind your back. It is only 6 square inches of your time. . . and what joy it will bring!
If you don’t know what this project is yet, click on the link above to get the whole scoop and where to mail them. The story will make you smile, it is heartwarming!
Any pattern can be used, variety is welcomed, but so is this simple square.
Instructions, Seed Stitch, Six Inch Square
Homespun by Lion Brand Yarnis what I used, but any yarn will work. (See Note 1 below.)
Size 10 needles which translate to 6.0 mm (You may have to use a different size, see Note 1 below.)
Cast on 15 stitches. (Adjust to your tension and yarn, but must be uneven number of stitches)
Knit 1, *Purl 1, Knit 1. Repeat from * across row.
(If you are a beginner and lose track, you will be knitting the purl stitches and purling the knit stitches from the row before. The purl stitches have the prominent bump facing you. )
Knit as many rows as needed to reach 6 inches(See Note 2 below.)
Bind off, weave in ends.
Tie on a tag with your name and town and state, etc.
Send to Shelly so your square can be one of 48 in the afghan that will make a kid happy, happy, happy.
Don’t feel bad if you can’t do the fancy patterns that some of the crocheters do with the multi colors — the eye must have a place to rest and stained glass if you think about it has solid pieces! Besides, this has texture. Can you see it - the solid one with the little bumps? Pick your color, ANY color!
Knitters, where are you???? Do you know one? Tell them! I thank you, Shelly thanks you, everyone involved in this project thanks you, the kids thank you, their parents thank you. (OK, next summer they will thank you, they don’t know yet!)
NOTE 1: This yarn is relatively soft. I honestly don’t have a clue how to change gauge from one yarn to another other than just knitting a few inches and measuring it and using more or less stitches and trying again. You may have to try different sized needles. That is what I did. So use what you have and adjust the stitches, it will be beautiful! There have been so many different weight and types of yarns used, it just seems to all work together better than you would think.
Note 2: The bind off row will take a bit of that 6 inches, so better to err on slightly smaller size, it is easier for those putting it together to add an extra row of black around your square than to rip out a row or two of your stitching. And they have a lot of crocheting to do — 48 squares per afghan!
Note: oops, I wrote pearl, I have no clue why, when it should have been purl. Thanks to Mary for bringing it to my attention.
