Thursday Thirteen - Our son

Posted at 11:44 pm under Thursday Thirteen, photo

Thirteen Things about Our Son

1. Played golf a bit with his dad as a teenager. Two temperamental males playing the same hole at the same time. . . .

2. He took diving for a summer.

3. He took swimming from 6 months to about 3.5 years, then off and on later. I was in the water with him the first 2.5 years, but when it came time for the graduation show one year, I made his dad do it, with the excuse they never got to do it together (job interfered), but I was too shy to be involved — both reasons applied in reality.

4. He played soccer. On the few cold days we had, I was bundled up in layers, AND leg warmers, and scarves and hats and gloves, etc. I sat warm (relatively) in my chair and the other parents tried to look cool or didn’t own winter gear — and froze! I had the last laugh, even if I did look weird dressed like that in Central Florida.

5. He took tap and ballet one year. There is a cute story there.

6. He took ballet the next year. The owners of the studio picked him up several times a week at the Rec center because I worked in another town. They wanted him to audition for the Boston Ballet, but he quit dancing. Another story there. (Note: He was in better physical condition during ballet than Tae Kwon Do.)

7. He took Tae Kwon Do with me and then again without me. I embarrassed him horribly - more than once. He let me know it, too.

8. He acted (was a shill in the audience) in the only play I did. (Goodvibes Medicine Show)

9 He acted in a play with his dad and had to video a brief local programming piece at night with a 103 fever. What a trooper. (Six Characters in Search of an Author) Another story to be told there (guns and drunks, no, not together).

10. He did a paid commercial for HGTV with his Dad (but separate shootings) for Grandparents Day for a CD they were selling. We had to work, so another parent took him. He had a great time, he got to drive an ancient pickup truck in an old man’s lap — Had I been there, I would not have allowed it. It was on a public street. He also found out how they get puppies to lick people on camera. . . they smeared dog food behind the poor child’s ear. Yuck. We just found the copy of the video! We thought we had taped over it. You know: “You had to have taped over it.” “No, I didn’t.” “Then he must have done it.” And so on for years. Another story about how he spent his money.

11. I talked him into being a cute little “guard” of two little harem girls at SPIFFS one year. He did nothing but stand with his arms folded, took it very seriously. Later he was in Scharazade done as a belly dance with me. He and his dad played multiple rolls. No, they didn’t dance. Picture of him as the guard.

12. He reluctantly gave up being Santa Claus at a mall show for school to be in a church play of Amahl and the Night Visitors. I was choreographing the children’s dance. Used neighborhood kids and his 12 year old cousin while he was visiting us for a while. Then I got 104 fever (flu) and couldn’t do my dance, he had to be in charge! What a kid!

13. Still a glutton for punishment (me, not him) I taught neighborhood kids a ‘belly dance’ to perform at a hafla. (Basically a LOT of belly dancers performing in this case. He came up with the comedy to insert, it was brilliant. Another story. His Tae Kwon Do came in handy for the split jumps he and Scott did.

And no, he is not involved in the arts any longer. Golf is his thing.

After trying out all those different activities, at least he knows what he really wants to do now!

I love that he went from swimming and golf and tae kwon do and soccer to tap and ballet. What a curious and adventuresome young man!

He sounds like quite the Renaissance Man, due in equal part to how he was raised I’ll bet.

He sounds like a great kid and certainly looks like one. I expect he’ll return to the arts one of these days.

Dog food behind the ears? Eeeew. I suppose that’s the price of success.

He was beautiful as a boy, bet he’s a hunk now. It sounds as if you gave him some wonderful experiences that helped him mature. Great memories (I accidentally typed “memeories” is that a new word?)

Damozel - He may, but he has so many other interests now, I think as much as it is a part of his father’s and my lives, it is not really who he is, but he at least knows the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.
Yeah, I second the eeew. Thank you, he is a great 29 year old.

    Burntofferings - he is 29 years… I’ll stop by.

Gattina, it is a bit confusing, sorry, but I had to try it out, I love experimenting with different things. My son is a lot like your son in that respect, lol.

  13. Meeon 12 Aug 2007 at 9:43 pm 13

Kailani, that’s why we let him, I never had those experiences, but a lot of people didn’t understand and thought I let him be a quitter, that’s not what it was at all. He had to finish his commitment for the season or similar, in spite of his not wanting to. Then he was free to try something else.

  14. Meeon 12 Aug 2007 at 9:43 pm 14

The Gal Herself - I think many of us would be that curious if we were given the opportunity.

  15. Meeon 12 Aug 2007 at 9:45 pm 15

Robin, I’m sure we influenced him some, but I think he was his own person before I had much of a chance! He seems to be less experimental in fun things, but he has not been afraid to try more than one career.

Shelly - “memeories” — gee as MeeAugraphie, I like that word. Can I adopt it? Memories about me!

  17. Meeon 12 Aug 2007 at 9:50 pm 17

Thanks, Shelby, I do adore him, I admit it.
